In case difficulty level is a concern, I'll walk through some of the more challenging parts of the Wind Waker piece. What Tyler did is pure evil. The flim patents battle between the{so called}legitmate film producers led by Thomas Edison and upstart producers that refused to pay them royalties for their product and own innovation is particularly illuminating and well told and is a story not often told. This book may not for everyone, it is a narrative history that encompasses a wide range of areas of an industry in the throes of development and change from how the fledgling medium was financed, how the early film studios were designed /equipted / managed, popular film genres of the era and why the public liked them. It was beyond original, it was intelligent, it was sexy as all get out, but most of all it was a story you can't help but walk away from feeling so incredibly satisfied because it was so chock full of fun and originality. Natural resource abundance in Australia played a prominent role in some periods and faded during others, but overall, and contrary to the conventional view of economists, it was a blessing rather than a curse. Participation in the world trading system, when it flourished, brought significant benefits, and during the interwar period when it did n. McLean is a visiting research fellow in economics at the University of Adelaide, where he taught for many years. Ian WWhile the book's focus is on natural resources and institutions, the author provides stimulating interpretations of many phases of economic history."--Simon Ville, American Historical Review"Why Australia Prospered is a rewarding read. The work of a manifestly fine scholar with many important points to make and ideas that need to be heard far beyond university economics departments, or what's left of them."--Stephen Matchett, Australian"An outstanding piece of scholarship. Anyone with even a superficial interest in Australian economic history should read it, and be educated by it."--Tim Hatton, Australian Economic History Review"McLean has an admirable ability to sum up complex issues using simple, often elegant sentences. A carefully researched book."--Times Higher Education Supplement"McLean provides a comprehensive account of the factors contributing to Australia's remarkable economic growth."--Choice"In this impressive book McLean demonstrates the contribution economic history can make to scholarship on the past and the politics of the pre
