He graduated in physics and mathematics from Rostov University and studied literature by correspondence course at Moscow University. In World War II he fought as an artillery officer, attaining the rank of captain. The publication of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich in Novy Mir in 1962 was followed by publication, in the West, of his novels Cancer Ward and The First Circle. In 1945, however, after making derogatory remarks about Stalin in a letter, he was arrested and summarily sentenced to eight years in forced labour camps, followed by internal exile. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was born in 1918 and gThe storyline made it easy to put down and pick up right where you left off a few hours later. The story's muted color schemes and simple characters give it a particularly classic feel, unlike anything else you might find in contemporary tales. It has a linked table of contents; the book itself has no footnotes.. This book will help un-skew the record.. As with life, it wasn't excessively happy, and bad things happen. His story is interwoven with the stories of a dozen fellow prisoners - each an unforgettable human being - from the prison janitor to the tormented Marxist intellectual who designed the Dnieper dam; of the reigning elite and their conflicted subordinates; and of the women, wretched or privileged, bound to these men. A landmark of Soviet literature, The First Circle is as powerful today as it was when it was first published, nearly thirty years ago.. Set in Moscow during a three-day period in December 1949, The First Circle is the story of the prisoner Gleb Nerzhin, a brilliant mathematician"A great novel A majestic work of genius" Sunday Times "The First Circle is arguably the greatest Russian novel of the century" Spectator "A future generation of Russians will be able to come to terms with their history through books like Doctor Zhivago and The First Circle" Financial Times
